Multiple Taxation and Quality of Service
20 October 2014
Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Dr. Eugene Juwah, believes that multiple taxation is partly responsible for poor Quality of Service in the telecommunications industry.

“We have been confronted with the issue of multiple taxation and multiple regulations at the various strata of the government. This has contributed its own challenge to the quality of service as the spread of these critical infrastructure are restricted on account of some of these actions,” he told a delegation at the 25th Enugu International Trade Fair.

Juwah went on to say that states should look at less taxation if they want better service. “Some state governments are beginning to see the benefits of having pervasive telecommunication infrastructure in their domain and are now willing to focus on less taxation. We urge other states and local governments that have not joined to do so,” he said.

During the event, the President of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) Dr. Ifeanyi Okoye, urged the NCC to regulate telecommunication operators to protect their vulnerable customers.

“There is no doubt that a high level of positive change has taken place in this sector of our economy, which has equally accelerated socio-economic development of our nation,” he said.
